Decrecimiento

Degrowth is an economic and social approach that prioritises human well-being and the preservation of ecological systems over continuous economic growth. It opposes the prevailing “higher, faster, further” logic, which fosters competition, overwork, social exclusion, and environmental destruction. In practice, degrowth involves reducing production and consumption in wealthy regions, promoting self-determined development in the Global South, and restructuring economies around sufficiency rather than mere efficiency or technological fixes. It calls for slower, more meaningful lifestyles, democratic participation, and locally rooted yet interconnected economic systems. Degrowth rejects the notion that economic growth can be fully decoupled from resource use and opposes forms of growth criticism that ignore social justice. The goal is to create a free, equal, and sustainable society which can be achieved through radical reforms to work, economic structures, as well as through small-scale practice and learning based on progressive examples.
